ISLAMABAD: In a move to streamline the application process for net-metering connections, the government is set to introduce a digital portal aimed at enhancing transparency, efficiency, and user accessibility.
The development was revealed during a meeting chaired by Federal Energy Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, where he emphasized the urgent need for “immediate and effective solutions” to challenges faced by applicants seeking net-metering connections.
According to an official statement issued on Tuesday, the minister directed that the application process be made “simple, transparent, and user-friendly.” He also instructed electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) to train their staff on using the portal and conduct practical demonstrations to ensure smooth implementation.
Leghari further stressed the importance of launching a public awareness campaign to educate consumers on the portal’s benefits and the transparency it offers.
This initiative comes in the wake of a controversial reduction in the net-metering buyback rate—from Rs27 to Rs10 per unit—earlier this year. The move faced strong backlash, prompting the government to widen consultations on the Solar Net Metering Regulations and re-submit proposals to the federal cabinet after stakeholder feedback.
